Book Printing Guide
From a finished manuscript to a boxed print run, with the decisions in the order you will face them.
Printing a book is a sequence of decisions, and most first time authors meet them all at once. Trim size, paper, binding, cover finish, print quantity and proofing each affect the others, and changing one late usually means redoing another.
Taken in order, none of them is difficult. Taken at random, they produce a book that costs more than it should and looks slightly wrong in ways that are hard to name.
This guide takes them in order.
Trim Size And Interior Layout
Trim size is the finished page dimension. Common Indian choices are Demy, 5.5 by 8.5 inches, which suits novels and general non fiction, and A5 for handbooks and academic titles. Larger formats suit textbooks, workbooks and illustrated titles.
Set the interior to the trim size from the beginning rather than designing on A4 and scaling later, which shrinks type and margins together and produces cramped pages. Use mirror margins with a generous inside allowance, keep body type between 10 and 12 point depending on the typeface, and make sure chapters open consistently, usually on a right hand page.
Paper And Binding
Interior paper is usually in the 70 to 100 GSM range. Lighter paper keeps the book slim and cheap to post; heavier paper feels more substantial and handles images better. A cream or natural shade is easier on the eye for long fiction, while white is standard for academic and illustrated work.
Perfect binding, with a squared glued spine and a printed cover, is the standard for paperbacks and is what most readers expect. Hardcover is used for premium, gift and library editions. Spiral is used for workbooks and manuals that must lie flat. Spine width depends on page count and paper weight, so the cover cannot be finalised until the interior page count is fixed.
Cover Setup
A print cover is a single spread containing the back cover, spine and front cover, not three separate files. It needs bleed beyond the trim on all outer edges so trimming never exposes a white sliver, and safe margins inside the trim so text is not cut.
Keep spine text clear of the fold, and be aware that on thin books the spine may be too narrow for legible text. Cover artwork should be supplied at high resolution; a low resolution front cover is the most visible quality failure a self published book can have.
Digital Or Offset
Digital printing has no plate setup, so short runs are economical and reprints are easy. It suits first editions, author copies, review copies, workshop material and any title where demand is unproven. It is the right answer for most first time authors.
Offset printing has a setup cost that is spread across the run, so the per copy price falls sharply at higher quantities and becomes the cheaper option for large print runs. Ask for both quotes at your expected quantity rather than assuming; the crossover point depends on page count, size and colour.
Proofs, Quantity And Delivery
Always approve a physical proof copy before a run. On paper you will catch things that never show on screen: a running head repeating the wrong chapter, a spine that is slightly off centre, a cover colour heavier than expected, or a margin that feels tight once bound.
Choose quantity honestly. Storage, cash flow and the real distribution plan matter more than the lower per copy price of a big run. Many authors print a modest first run, sell and gather feedback, then reprint with corrections. Finished books can be collected in New Delhi or couriered; boxes of books are heavy, so confirm the delivery charge before dispatch.
How To Place A Printing Order With Us

Read the page count from your PDF reader rather than estimating it, and give an exact page range if only part of the document should be printed.
4. Enter Number Of Copies
There is no minimum. One copy is a valid order, and so is a run of several thousand. Copy count is what decides whether digital or offset production is cheaper for you.

The order summary combines pages, sides, colour mode and copies into a live estimate so you can compare options before committing to anything.
6. Submit / Request Order

Binding, Collection And Delivery Options
Loose sheets suit drafts and anything destined for a ring file. Spiral and wiro binding lie completely flat, which is why they are the default for notes, lab records, manuals and working documents. Soft cover perfect binding gives a squared, printable spine and is the usual choice for project reports, proposals and paperbacks. Hardbinding, with foil spine text where required, is used for theses, archival record copies and premium editions. Card covers from 250 to 300 GSM, with matt or gloss lamination, can be added to any bound document and cost very little across a small number of copies.

The delivery charge depends on parcel weight and your destination pin code, is paid by the customer, and is quoted before dispatch rather than added afterwards. Delhi NCR addresses in Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad are usually quickest; remote pin codes take longest. What Drives The Price
Four inputs account for almost every printing quote: total pages, number of sides, colour mode and number of copies. Pages set the volume of the job. Sides decide how many physical sheets that volume becomes, so double side printing halves paper use, document thickness and courier weight in one decision. Colour mode sets the per side rate, with black and white lowest, full colour highest, and mixed mode applying colour rates only to the pages that genuinely contain colour. Copies multiply the run, but not linearly, because file checking and setup happen once regardless of quantity and the per copy cost therefore falls as the run grows. Binding, paper upgrades, card covers, lamination and A3 pages are quoted on top, and delivery is always separate.
