About This Novel

When Ira returns to Kolkata to close her grandmother's crumbling bookshop on College Street, she expects dust, debt and a fortnight of paperwork. What she finds instead is a tin trunk of letters written across three monsoons in the 1970s, addressed to a man who never collected them. The Monsoon Letters follows Ira as she reads them in order, one rain-soaked evening at a time, and slowly understands that the grandmother she thought she knew lived an entire life before motherhood.

Ananya Bhattacharya writes with restraint and warmth, letting the city do much of the emotional work. Trams, wet pavements, second-hand paperbacks and the smell of old paper form the backdrop for a story about ambition, quiet sacrifice and the choices women of that generation made without announcement. The novel moves between the 1970s letters and the present day, and each timeline sharpens the other.

This is a book for readers who love slow, character-driven fiction in the tradition of Anita Desai and Amitav Ghosh. It rewards attention, closes on a note that feels earned rather than engineered, and lingers for days after the final page.
